Luciano Buonfiglio today, during the Executive Committee meeting, congratulated President Angelo Binaghi and the Italian Tennis Federation (Federtennis), which has become the federation with the highest number of registered athletes. The Coni (Italian National Olympic Committee) president announced that on 3 November he will be in Brussels to present to the European Union the project on the inclusion of women in sports governance, which has already been outlined to IOC President Kirsty Coventry. Great satisfaction was expressed at the success of the launch of the “Win For Italia Team” lottery, an initiative that has already enabled Coni to carry out major projects on sports facilities. Pending final approval and registration by the Court of Auditors of Coni’s new statutes, the Executive Committee resolved to confirm Ugo Taucer as Attorney General for Sport.
“Ugo Taucer has been reappointed as Attorney General for Sport,” Coni’s head said. “There was just one abstention,” he added. “But ideas develop gradually and take shape as we share them with others, and we have arrived at this solution. Not least because the decree has not been sent back to us.” This refers to the amendment to sports justice approved by Coni but which has yet to be registered with the Court of Auditors.
Regarding Taucer’s reappointment, Figc (Italian Football Federation) commissioner Giovanni Malagò said: “On the proposal of President Buonfiglio, I voted in favour.” Taucer’s investigation into Marco Di Paola, head of FISE (equestrian sports), is now reportedly in its final stages. Everything centres on the elective assembly, a matter that has been dragging on for a long time. Lawyer Di Paola, who is close to Malagò, is also vice-president of Coni. The other vice-president is Diana Bianchedi, who is also very closely linked to Malagò: both vice-presidents remain in their posts despite an attempt to replace them. The vice-presidents do not always see eye to eye with Buonfiglio. As regards the budget, the first revision of the 2026 budget has been approved, showing a significant improvement in the projected financial result, with a reduction in the loss of approximately €15.2 million, from around €24.3 million in the initial budget to €9.051 million. The Coni 2027 budget was also approved; it forecasts a profit of 376,000 euros, compared with the loss of 9.1 million euros estimated in the 2026 revised budget. The return to financial equilibrium is underpinned by increased state funding and the cost reductions forecast for 2027. Secretary-General Carlo Mornati has done a commendable job. The Italy Team delegation (comprising 46 athletes) has been approved and will depart tomorrow for the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, where Elisa Santoni will serve as head of mission. The flag-bearers will be two representatives from federations that have never had a flag-bearer at the Games before. They are Ilenia Moro, team captain of the futsal team, and Francesco Trevisan from the table tennis team. Buonfiglio will not be attending Dakar 2026; he will be in Brussels.
